Caricature at the service of public sadness
Following its previous work on the history of Portugal, namely the story of “Inês de Castro”, “Padeira de Aljubarrota” and more recently “A Ver Navios no reign de D. João VI and Carlota Joaquina”, the company S.A.Marionetas gives continuation of this cycle addressing the theme of the Republic.
In this production, the concern of reporting historical events remains, both at a political and social level, using string puppets for this purpose.
The construction of the puppets is inspired by the caricatural work of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, thus creating characters that are living caricatures that represent those involved in the events that culminated in the 1910 revolution.
Bordalo Pinheiro and his most famous character Zé Povinho meet in a lively conversation to tell each other the events that led to the establishment of the Republic. Bordalo passed away before everything happened, but Zé will tell you how it all happened. Contemporary artists of the time also attended, and appeared to give a brushstroke or a touch of poetry to the events.
A country in chaos, a king erased, an angry people, and the caricature at the service of public sadness.

A Ver Navios
1807, November. Almost at the gates of Lisbon, Napoleon's troops threaten to make the King capitulate,
as has already happened throughout Europe and even in neighboring Spain
with whom he had previously formed a coalition.
In the office, D. João VI meets with his advisors. He has to decide whether to join the Continental Blockade decreed by Napoleon against the English, or whether to embark on a journey never undertaken by a European monarch with the support of the “ever-present and old allies” of the English.
Thus begins the show that tells the great adventure of D. João VI
and his entire court in Brazil. It tells how it happened and why it happened.
The cast has 22 string puppets.

S.A.Marionetas intends with this creation to pay homage to two masterpieces of Portuguese culture - The Pilgrimage of Fernão Mendes Pinto and the album For this river above Fausto Bordalo Dias - through the puppet theater, following the ideological line of creation of Fausto himself , converging tradition with modernity. We intend to build a visual material around the hearing of this disc, crossing different techniques and performative languages. Hear, See and Feel is the proposal.

the unfortunate
A boy becomes king at the age of thirteen! Poor thing… weak, weak and without leadership power, he marries his cousin without saying anything to the Pope! Brother Afonso, on the other hand, was fearless and strong and by all means will try to take the throne from his brother. In this process he gets the support of the Church, the nobles and even the people. Poor boy! that despite everything there is managing to reign with the support of his wife. But Afonso, eager for power, will achieve his goals by taking his brother into exile in Toledo!

The sisters don't pay, the brother gets angry and tries to put order in the kingdom! But… clergy and nobles also don't like the new provisions !! Even so, D. Afonso reigned and left the first document written in Portuguese!

Amigo (2011)
The company S.A.Marionetas - Teatro & Bonecos presents its most recent production “AMIGO”, an original by José Gil and Camila Moreira. After S.A.Marionetas co-produced in 2007 with CêDêCê - contemporary dance company the show The Pandora's Box, now brings contemporary dance and puppetry together in a naked space where one of the most beautiful values found can have between two beings - friendship. “FRIEND” is the fulfillment of an old desire between the two protagonists (José Gil and Camila Moreira) where it is intended to merge these two forms of art in a way never seen before, thus leading to a narrative approach, where words are replaced through music and movement.
“FRIEND” may be the most beautiful, but at the same time the most risky show we have ever done, as we are working with a 15-string puppet live on a stage with a ballerina where anything can happen, as in the circus that the public you will see if the artist “falls” here is more if the artists “curl up” JG / CM.

GENESIS (2009)
Auto of Creation + Retable of the Last Judgment
This troupe of puppeteers promised their benefactor Dom Pero Paes Pereira, a good and faithful man, to tell the stories he most liked using his tombstone. This good man did not want to use this beautiful work of art in limestone for his final rest, thus leaving it in testament to this itinerant troupe of puppeteers who recreated the “Auto da Criação” and the “Final Judgment” altarpiece according to his desire. The "functions" depict an allegory of the creation of the world with Adam, Eve, the forbidden and clear fruit to the Serpent, as well as the doomsday altarpiece where sinners will go to Hell and good men will go to Heaven. But that judgment will be done by all those who attend these functions.

A Culpa foi da Inês (2005)
Companhia S.A.Marionetas - Teatro & Bonecos presents, for the first time in puppet theater, the tragic life of D. Inês de Castro and D. Pedro I. The show encompasses the time period beginning with the birth of D. Pedro I, portraying the universal romantic tragedy, in a perspective that seeks to balance the legendary aspect with history, but also to recreate and reinvent the myth by correlating it with its more or less contemporary interpretations. The cast has fifty puppets.
"Kingdom of Portugal. The year of Grace is in 1320 and in the recent nation there is still a struggle with the Moors, there to the south, in the Algarve, sometimes with the neighbors of Castile, there to the east, and, against the plague everywhere ... The King , the brave D. Afonso IV, has the best news of the year this spring: the young D. Pedro was born in Coimbra and everything led him to believe that this time Providência smiled at him ... the future looked bright. Now, for the kingdom to thrive like its son, it was enough to try to find him a wife. But there would certainly be no problems… ”

This new production tells the life of D. Sancho I, son of D. Afonso Henriques. Once again, S.A. Marionetas approaches the history of Portugal in a medieval-themed puppet theater production, where the puppets and the actors/puppeteers interact with the audience. These are wooden carved puppets presented on a mobile structure, accompanied by musicians, puppeteers, and actors. All of this in an entertaining version that tells the story of Portugal's second king, D. Sancho I, The Populator.

Fado Portugal (2011)
a story of knife and bowl
It's a journey into the bohemian atmosphere of early 20th-century Portugal, where Fado begins to emerge. The characters from the painting by Malhoa come to life, and Adelaide da Facada and Amâncio experience various adventures that portray the "feeling" and "being Portuguese," as well as "Portuguese Fado." Longing, sadness, joy, and love are the feelings that characterize the Portuguese people and are depicted in this show. From informal Fado to improvised songs, the characters fill the space where movement and music take the place of words.

Entreacto (1997)
In 1990, the show "Um Mimo de Mimo" premiered, touring the country until 1994, the year in which Cartoon's de Mímica premiered, a logical succession of the previous show, remaining on stage for two years. In 1996, Cartoon's de Mímica II was a further evolution of the project begun in 1990.
Entreacto is the combination of two gestural arts, mime and puppetry, brought together here through the manipulation of the body as a puppet, also representing the culmination of a new evolutionary leap in its form and aesthetics.

As Aventuras do Menino Madeira (2010)
The adventures of the wooden boy are based on the adventures of Pinocchio and are a production made specifically for presentation at Perlim Terra de Sonhos.
In this play, our hero goes through various adventures and misadventures, from being imprisoned and forced to work in a circus to being swallowed by a whale, always accompanied by his faithful Cricket. In the end, he survives and goes to live with Gepetto, his creator.

O Cerco (2014)
O Cerco depicts the episode in Portuguese history in which the city of Guimarães is besieged by Alfonso VII of Leão.
Two cooks and an assistant are about to make a "miracle broth" that transforms ordinary mortals into true kings! Like snake oil salesmen touting their miraculous product, they are interrupted by Queen Teresa's herald with terrible news... the county is under indefinite siege by King Alfonso VII of León!
As valiant defenders of the county, they begin a fervent description of what is happening and build the characters/puppets from the fruits and vegetables they have on hand. Simultaneously, they cook their miraculous broth that restores strength and transforms men into kings.
The show takes place in a cart decorated with elements alluding to a medieval kitchen. The narrative is built with the participation of the audience, remaining faithful to real events and characters.

This project develops educational activities that, through contact and interaction with singing and theater, contribute to their development as a means of promoting personal growth, sensitivity, and imagination in children and young people, as well as revitalizing the school environment.

Once upon a time, there were two friends who loved to play together, but in the place where they played, there was a friendly little monster called Scare. Although he was friendly and completely harmless, Scare loved to play tricks on others. Sometimes he hid things inside boxes, other times he amused himself by moving everything around. When he played these tricks, there was always a big mess!
But deep down, Susto just wanted a friend to play with.

Drácula (1999)
Wine, betrayal, blood, and a big problem
On the threshold of the third millennium, the Prince of Darkness faces a perplexing dilemma that could jeopardize his centuries-long reign.
Dracula sleeps peacefully in his coffin. Centuries pass, and he only awakens to satisfy his hunger and consequently resolve a minor morning problem of little importance, drinking the blood of some rats that pass by. Everything goes smoothly until, one routine day, Count Dracula wakes up, stretches out his arm, as is his habit, gropes for a rat and... "Ahhhhhh where are my teeth?!?!?!"
Without his precious teeth, he can't satisfy his hunger or solve his morning problem. So, he decides to leave his dark and comforting tomb to resolve the issue. But the world has changed, a lot...
This is a show for adults over 18 years of age that addresses themes related to sexual orientation, dementia, and alcoholism.

Afonso III (2015)
Bolognese
The king is about to kick the bucket!
King Dinis, his son, helps with governance.
In the tavern, two thirsty patrons praise his poems in the shadow of the figure of the great Afonso III. Amidst toasts and hearty drinks, they both extol his deeds and ironically comment on how he came to the throne. Suddenly, the great Afonso III awakens, offended by so much foolishness and, above all, by their failure to speak of his great feat: the definitive conquest of the Kingdom of the Algarve! The conversation livens up, and from toast to toast they talk about the life and deeds of this great king who organized the kingdom, minted coins, moved the capital to Lisbon, promoted equality, but... was exhumed! He and the kingdom!
Considered the "father of the Portuguese state," he eventually redeemed himself, and the Abbot of Alcobaça lifted his exhumation, after which he was buried in the magnificent Alcobaça Monastery.

Padeira de Aljubarrota (2006)
The Baker of Aljubarrota presents the life of the brave woman Brites de Almeida, who was born in the Algarve region and soon ventured throughout the country, eventually settling in Aljubarrota as a baker.
In 1385, when battles broke out nearby and the Portuguese army managed to route the numerous Spanish enemies, Brites de Almeida lent a hand with her famous shovel!
We tried not to leave out either the true facts of this very important period in our history or the legends created around it.

Princesa Lia (2008)
The Christian princess Lia and the Moorish governor of Feira Castle, Ben Iussef, secretly marry and return to Feira Castle, where peace reigned between Christians and Moors.
One day, rumors reached the great Caliphate of Córdoba that Yusef had married Lia and had ceased to follow Islamic law. The Caliph then ordered Ben Aligula, Yusef's brother, to go to the Fair, arrest them both, and execute them.
At the fair, Ben Aligula orders the arrest of the two, but he is disobeyed, as Yusef and Lia were much loved and respected by all. Aligula, furious and fearing arrest, cowardly attacks Yusef and kills him. Amidst the ensuing commotion, Lia calms everyone, saying it was God's will. Aligula then takes power as governor and orders Lia's death for having led her brother astray from Islamic law. Lia is then taken by the executioner to the execution site. However, the executioner and soldiers, who held Lia and Yusef in high regard, are unable to carry out the sentence. They conspire, stage Lia's death to convince Aligula, and hide her. Time passed, and Lia began plotting to make Aligula pay for the wrong he had done to everyone. So, when the time came, Lia pretended to be a very old woman, capable of reading men's fate in the stars, and, together with Jineff, she worked out the details of her plan – to haunt Aligula with the evil deeds he had committed, making him flee with his lesson well learned...

With the death of King Ferdinand in 1383, the queen consort, Leonor Teles, signed the Treaty of Salvaterra de Magos with King Juan I of Castile, which defined the marriage of her daughter Beatriz to Juan I and established that the crown of Portugal would pass to her descendants. The Kingdom of Castile would then dominate Portugal.
This situation displeased the majority of the Portuguese population, who united and proclaimed D. João, Master of Avis, half-brother of D. Fernando, "Regent, governor and defender of the kingdom". Faced with this circumstance, D. Juan I invaded Portugal and besieged Lisbon. In March 1385, the Cortes met in Coimbra and proclaimed the Master of Avis as King of Portugal.
On July 8, 1385, King John I invaded Portugal again, through Almeida, with a large army of 40,000 men, then proceeding through Trancoso, Celorico da Beira, Coimbra, Soure, and Leiria. The Portuguese army, commanded by Nuno Álvares Pereira, positioned itself for battle. Battle became inevitable.
On August 14th, early in the morning, the army of D. João Mestre de Avis occupied a very strong position on the terrain, chosen the day before by Nuno Álvares Pereira, the plateau of São Jorge. On the battlefield, Portuguese casualties numbered around 1,000 dead, while the Castilian army suffered approximately 4,000 dead and 5,000 prisoners.
The fulfillment of a promise made by King John I, Master of Avis, in gratitude for the victory at Aljubarrota, which secured his throne and guaranteed the independence of Portugal, resulted in the construction of the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, also known as the Monastery of Batalha.
For Portugal, this battle, which took place on August 14, 1385, was one of the most decisive events in its history. It defined national borders and identity.

Almanzor (2007)
the spell cast by the Moorish king at Alcobaça Castle
Around the year 978, during the Caliphate of Córdoba, reigned the Vizier Abu Amir Muhammad Ibn Abdullah Ibn Abi Amir, nicknamed Al-Mansur, "the victorious," known to Christians as Almanzor. He led dozens of campaigns against the Christians in the Iberian Peninsula, never losing one, and established the Caliphate's border just below the Douro River. Feared by all, he eventually died in battle. Time passed, and the legends remained.
Almanzor, the Moorish king's sorcery in Alcobaça Castle, tells us the legend in which, many centuries later, the spirit of Almanzor still lives in this castle, bewitching and imprisoning forever the unsuspecting maidens who went to the castle's well to fetch water.

Simon is an elf who lives in libraries and spends his time reading the stories in books. Sometimes, when he has company, he reads these stories aloud.
A project to encourage reading, which toured the country visiting numerous libraries, telling stories by various national and international authors.
